Shavuot / Pentecost...

image

This holiday has several names: Shavuot (Hebrew), Pentecost (Greek term), Feast of Weeks, and Latter Firstfruits. It is most commonly referred to as Shavuot or Pentecost. This holiday occurs 50 days after the earlier "Firstfruits" holiday which fell during Passover. During Biblical times, the Jewish people dedicated the first fruits of the wheat harvest on Shavuot (Lev 23:16). God appointed several watershed events to occur on Shavuot in the early days of the Body of Messiah. Acts chapter 2 records that God sent the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) to live inside all true followers of the Messiah Yeshua on Shavuot. On the same day, God brought over three thousand Jewish people to follow the Messiah (Acts 2:41).

Ways to celebrate:

This is a great time to come together in a home or congregation to read aloud and celebrate the fact that God sent His Ruach (Spirit) to come and remain inside all followers of the Messiah. God's Ruach in us produces His fruit (Galatians 5:23-23). Therefore, we have enjoyed making dishes on this day that incorporate lots of fruit (example - fruit pizza). Traditionally, the book of Ruth is also read on this day. The harvest background to this story fits with the theme of Shavuot.
